Speaker: Dr. Alan Journet

Dr. Alan Journet is Professor Emeritus, Biology and Environmental Science, Southeast Missouri State University where he taught biology (primarily ecology, conservation biology, environmental science, and process of science) for 30 years before retiring in 2010 and relocating to Southern Oregon with his wife, Dr. Kathy Conway.

Alan is or was:

–    Author/co-author of over 100 scientific, technical, and popular press articles on ecology, environmental issues, teaching, and climate change,

–    President, Missouri Chapter, Society for Conservation Biology 2007 – 2009

–    2011 – 2019 spent several terms teaching a ten-week course entitled ‘Climate Change and the Rogue Valley’ as a ten week Southern Oregon University – Located in Ashland, Oregon / Osher Lifelong Learning Institute course, has taught several mini-courses and delivered many presentations on climate change particularly as related to Southern Oregon.

–    in 2017 developed with a team the SOCAN Master Climate Protector course offered for several years as a community course but now is both an SOU course in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Sustainability and, again, an Osher Lifelong Learning Institute course. 

–    With Kathy Conway in 2012 co-founded Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN http://socan.eeco) to promote awareness about climate change and its consequences and encourage individual and collective action. Has served as Co-facilitator with Kathy throughout.

–    Since 2013 he has served on the Board of the Applegate Partnership and Watershed Council.

–    A resident of the Applegate Valley where he and Kathy built a passive/active solar home on 20 acres of wooded Oregon.

Presentation: Oregon Climate: Trends and Projections

Dr. Journet will explore historic trends in temperature and precipitation and what the climate models suggest will be our future.
