ESF Meeting April 14, 2026 Small Nuclear Power Plants

In this presentation we host Sham Beri, an engineer who has spent a career working on quality assurance for nuclear power plants.

Speaker: Sham Beri
Sham is the leader of Beri Associates. He has over 40 years of experience in design, construction, modification, testing, inspection and auditing of mechanical, electrical and I&C components and component parts. Most of these were directly related to nuclear quality assurance, quality control and ISO 9001 based QMS. When he was an employee of PGE, he supported decommissioning the Trojan Nuclear Plant in 1993 and provided quality assurance for storage of fuel on the Trojan site until 2024.

Presentation: Small Nuclear Power Plants
Sham presents information on small modular reactors and whether they can be built in a reasonable time frame and at a competitive cost. He tells us when we may see them come on line and what companies are in the lead in implanting this technology.

Additional Links and Information:

Michael Seely is an actual nuclear engineer with experience at Westinghouse, Southern California Edison (SONGS) and Barakah in the UAE.  He is very pro-nuclear of course but also very fair and thorough in his assessment of how new nuclear is developing.  His Youtube channel has lots of very good backgrounders:

This video he did jointly with others is absolutely essential for understanding the issues with HALEU fuel:

Here’s his online cost calculator.  You can pick any of the major “advanced reactor” types and make adjustments if needed (I usually change the lifetime and capacity factor to be a bit more reasonable) and get a very detailed and well documented cost estimate:
